A new Joint Research Centre paper reveals that intermediate and rural regions are projected to experience population decline, with remote rural regions being the most affected.

The publication examines demographic and economic trends in the 2000-2022 period and projects demographic shifts until 2040. These trends have significant implications for labour markets, public services, and economic growth.

To mitigate these challenges, the paper suggests adaptation strategies that include:

  • leveraging the knowledge and capital of older populations;

  • enhancing healthcare services to meet changing needs; and

  • ensuring that remote rural areas have the resources to adapt to demographic changes.
