The 9th European Congress on Rural Tourism took place in Rab on 6-9 May 2026, with the theme ‘Creative Transformation of Rural Tourism: Sustainability, Digitalisation and Inclusiveness’. It gathered policymakers, tourism practitioners, researchers, civil society organisations and international institutions to exchange experiences and shape future approaches to rural tourism development.

The event focused on the opportunities and challenges facing rural tourism in a rapidly changing social, economic and environmental context. Discussions considered how rural tourism can support local economies while preserving cultural heritage, landscapes and local identity. Particular attention was given to sustainability, digital transformation, community participation and the need to strengthen cooperation between tourism actors, local authorities, youth organisations and policymakers.

Participants concluded that rural tourism can play a central role in revitalising rural communities when policies, funding, local participation and innovation are aligned. They stressed that supporting young people, strengthening local capacities and ensuring community ownership of tourism development will be essential for the long-term sustainability and attractiveness of rural areas across Europe.

The 7th International Congress on Rural Tourism took place alongside the European congress, organised jointly by the Croatian Association for Tourism and Rural Development ‘Klub članova Selo’ and RuralTour – the European Federation of Rural Tourism.

The European congress was also an event of the Rural Pact Community Group on tourism and formed part of wider European discussions on the future of rural areas, sustainable tourism and community-led rural development.
