Tools assessing the vulnerability of European mountain regions

The MOVING project (MOuntain Valorisation through INterconnectedness and Green growth) recently launched a set of tools assessing the regional vulnerability of 23 mountain regions across Europe in the aim of boosting their sustainability in the face of climate change.

These ‘vulnerability tools’ provide valuable insights – on the basis of vulnerability matrices and spatial vulnerability maps compiled via a participatory approach – into the challenges faced by mountain communities and ecosystems in the context of climate change and emerging threats. They list identified vulnerability drivers, such as depopulation, and adaptive mechanisms suggested by consulted stakeholders, such as regional or local branding and marketing schemes.

The tools are intended to empower stakeholders to make informed decisions on climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts.

The MOVING project’s final conference will take place on 13 June 2024 in Brussels, Belgium. It will discuss the key role of mountain value chains in achieving Europe’s political objectives and targets for 2030 and present MOVING’s policy roadmap to unlock the power of mountain value chains, especially in the post-2027 programming period.
