Share your thoughts on the European Heritage Label’s revision

The European Commission has launched a public consultation on restructuring the European Heritage Label, an initiative that promotes heritage sites symbolic of Europe’s shared history and values. For rural areas, the revision could help boost local cultural tourism, stimulate innovation and development, and create job opportunities.

The European Heritage Label (EHL) scheme highlights heritage sites of symbolic European significance, promoting shared values, cultural diversity and a common sense of belonging. The restructuring aims to modernise the scheme, increase its visibility and make it more relevant for both local communities and visitors

The Commission is inviting stakeholders, cultural organisations, tourism professionals and citizens to contribute their views on the revision. Once the consultation concludes and proposals are finalised, the updated EHL scheme is expected to enhance the visibility and value of heritage sites across the EU.

Enhanced guidance and more inclusive selection criteria for EHL sites are set to broaden access and participation in the scheme. This will particularly benefit sites and communities in less developed regions and disadvantaged territories, including rural and remote areas. It should also increase inclusion of younger, disadvantaged and vulnerable groups.

In rural areas, smaller EHL sites often face financial and administrative challenges. By improving sites’ visibility and facilitating their access to EU funding and networks, the initiative is likely to boost local cultural tourism, stimulate innovation and regional development, and create employment opportunities, especially for small and medium-sized cultural operators.
