New step-by-step guide on how to register the name of a product as a Geographical Indication

Quality schemes protect Europe’s culinary heritage, culture and economy – the European Commission recently launched new guidance on the registration of Geographical Indications (GI) to protect agri-food products, including wines and spirit drinks, under EU GI system.

The guide overviews the application process for registering Geographical Indicationswhich grants intellectual property rights to the producers by registering the names of products whose qualities are specifically connected to their geographical areas, promoting their unique characteristics and traditional know-how. 

The guide features  testimonial videos promoting the benefits of the EU GI system both for producers and consumers, eligibility checks and a series of videos overviewing the process: 

  • Application: from forming a producer group to submitting documents to national and EU authorities.

  • Product specification: highlighting the characteristics of the product, the production method and its link to the place of production;

  • Single document: the summary of the product specification, subject to the EU level assessment by the European Commission in the recognition process;

  • Amendment request: overview of the procedure for amending the product specification of a registered GI.
