Launched on 14 May 2025, the new Alliance is an initiative of European Committee of the Regions member Marie Antoinette Maupertuis and Member of European Parliament Herbert Dorfmann, supported by Euromontana, the European Association of Mountain Areas. The initiative stems from the ‘Mountains need Europe and Europe needs mountains’ Manifesto.
"Mountain regions are not asking for privileges or compassion: they are simply demanding to be treated in a way that is commensurate with their strategic contribution to the European Union. With this Alliance, we have a clear ambition: to make our specific characteristics a lasting part of Europe's political and budgetary priorities.”
