Explore an EU-funded project’s climate adaptation solutions for mountain areas

Discover the MountResilience project’s collection of climate change adaptation solutions for improving resilience in mountain areas.

The EU-funded project is developing and testing different adaptation solutions, integrating technological and social innovations with nature-based approaches, in six demo regions around Europe. 

The demos include:

  • Using green infrastructure and rainwater to cool urban areas (Gabrovo, Bulgaria);
  • Creating an app to identify and monitor climate change impacts (Lapland, Finland);
  • Developing decision-support tools to help farmers and water consortia manage water issues (Piedmont, Italy);
  • Restoring mountain meadows through an integrated management approach (Rau Sadului, Romania);
  • Working with a nursing home to make it more resilient to rising summer temperatures (Tyrol, Austria);
  • Tackling water scarcity through water monitoring and improved governance (Valais, Switzerland).

In addition, the MountResilience tool – the project’s online database of solutions – contains a collection of articles and projects focused on climate change adaptation in mountain areas. It covers a wide range of topics, from stakeholder engagement to concrete environmental actions, with a particular emphasis on nature-based solutions.

Mountains cover 36% of Europe’s land area and are home to 17% of its population. They provide a range of ecosystem services and public goods to highland and lowland communities alike, from regulating water flow and supplying clean air, to recreation and tourism. However, their ecosystems are particularly sensitive to climate change. 

The MountResilience project is dedicated to strengthening the resilience of European regions and communities in mountainous areas, aiming to enhance their ability to adapt to climate change.
