The publication underlines that, despite persisting significant disparities between urban and rural areas, the highest increases in broadband performance in recent years occurred in rural areas across several EU countries. This represents a positive sign for ongoing efforts to close the digital divide across European territories, including through the EU rural vision

Evidence provided in the report aims to inform policy of the current situation and which areas to target through place-based strategies and initiatives. The publication makes the case for enhanced access and adoption of broadband in rural areas as a way to foster economic and social development.

Mapping and analysing the spatial distribution of broadband access and performance across the EU is essential for addressing regional disparities and tailoring responses to the specific needs of different places and communities.
