Description

PROJECT: 'New Rural Imaginaries of Contemporary Rural Spain. Culture, documentary, journalism (PID2021-122696NB-I00), funded by MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/ and ERDF 'A way of making Europe'.

RURALIM is a project that aims to explore new rural imaginary and narratives within the Spanish context. The project works to overcome stereotypes and allow society to project suitable, desirable, sustainable, and fairer rural representations. To this end, the project focuses on the study of cultural, social and journalistic narratives that delve into new collective imaginations of the rural in various contexts. The project has a marked cultural character, which is why it specifically applies close reading of cultural, media, and the audiovisual both in fiction and in journalistic productions.

The object of study is related to the new narratives of the rural that have a presence in both traditional and emerging media. Thus, diverse assets such as literature, cinema, television, but also new audiovisual productions or others that are rooted in local or independent initiatives. Among the outputs, RURALIM focuses on diverse topics including media coverage of depopulation, cultural and cinematic narratives on the rural, environmental issues and rural communities in the media/culture, or television/audiovisual representations of the rural.

RURALIM offers results in the form of the production of reflective, critical, and cultural analysis, essays and academic articles on the phenomenon of rural imaginaries. It is also producing some audiovisual materials for the circulation of knowledge. The project is committed to knowledge transfer, so also producing talks, and professional guidelines for the representation of the rural—in collaboration with the Catalan Association of Journalists, and the Catalan Audiovisual Council.

Overall, this is a project that, taking sociocultural perspective, is in tune with the objectives of both international bodies (United Nations or the European Union), including the EU Rural Pact, and national and regional bodies (rural development agendas) in achieving the objectives, sustainable development, more responsible production and consumption, and fairer and more balanced societies. The project provides academic reflection collective imagination, as well as necessary guides to accompany both institutions and creators in their efforts to rethink rural spaces.
