The commitment was signed by Mr Marcelino Marcos Líndez, regional Minister of Rural Environment and Agrarian Policy of Asturias, on 6 May 2026 at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development in Brussels.

Through this commitment, Asturias pledges to implement its own Rural Pact addressing key regional challenges such as demographic change, climate transition, territorial cohesion, energy, food sovereignty and digitalisation.

The Asturian Rural Pact is conceived as a coherent and transversal strategy, integrating economic, environmental, territorial and social dimensions. It will be delivered through a coordinated, place-based and participatory approach, with a focus on strengthening territorial cohesion, addressing demographic challenges and ensuring equal opportunities in rural and coastal areas.

The Pact includes over 120 measures covering areas such as agriculture, agro-industry, forestry, fisheries and essential public services. These actions aim to enhance the resilience and competitiveness of rural sectors, while also addressing broader territorial challenges, including access to services, infrastructure, mobility and quality of life.

By submitting this commitment, Asturias joins a growing number of public authorities across Europe strengthening rural areas and contributing to the shared goals of the EU rural vision through the EU Rural Pact.

Political commitments under the Rural Pact are voluntary actions by public authorities, supporting improved governance, stronger stakeholder engagement and better coordination of policies affecting rural areas.
