Description
The event aims to open a discussion at academic (Faculty of Economics) level on how the Rural Pact can be translated into concrete commitments for rural development in Romania.
Building on the emerging interest around a national Rural Pact community and on the presence of Romanian organisations already connected through the European Rural Pact platform, the meeting will bring together academic expertise, students, civil society, public authorities, and rural development practitioners.
The discussion will focus on identifying practical commitments that can strengthen the voice of rural communities, improve coordination between actors and governance levels, and support place-based solutions for the next European programming period, 2028-2034.
Particular attention will be given to themes such as rural competitiveness in agriculture and beyond, community engagement, access to knowledge and funding, youth involvement, social innovation, and the role of universities in supporting evidence-based rural policy. The event will also create a space for participants to explore how academic institutions can contribute to the Rural Pact through research, education, facilitation, policy dialogue, and capacity building.
The expected outcome is not only a better understanding of the Rural Pact, but also the identification of possible commitments, partnerships and follow-up actions that can support a stronger rural development agenda in Romania. The event will have two main parts: 1) At the Faculty venue - presentations and workshops in groups. 2) study visits at inspiring initiatives in Cluj county, rural areas.

Expected Outcomes
With the organisation of this event, we aim to identify key themes for the Rural Pact in Romania as well as relevant stakeholders to take part. On this occasion, a draft Manifesto for the Rural Pact in Romania will be elaborated, which will support its subsequent implementation in the country.

- A list of priority topics for Romania: the event can support the identification of several themes where Romanian actors could contribute meaningfully, such as rural youth, local governance, rural entrepreneurship beyond agriculture, capacity building, civic engagement, and coordination between funding levels.
- Draft commitments from the faculty or partner organisations: this could include supporting the Rural Pact through research, student involvement, policy briefs, events, data analysis, or partnerships with rural communities.
- A stronger link between academia and rural stakeholders: the event can position the faculty as a neutral space where public institutions, NGOs, LAGs, students and practitioners can meet and work on rural development topics.
