MOVING final conference outlines future for mountain areas in post-2027 EU priorities

Mountains and mountain value chains play a key role in achieving EU political targets by 2030 and shaping its post-2027 political agenda. The debate on the future EU rural policy is already open and mountain stakeholders are encouraged to actively participate in the forthcoming public consultations.

The closing event of the EU-funded MOVING project highlighted the importance of integrating rural and mountain regions into EU policies through innovative tools, expert-driven solutions, and strengthened cohesion efforts. The overall project objective was to build capacities and develop policy frameworks for value chains, contributing to mountain areas’ resilience and sustainability in the context of climate change.

The event discussed the role and place of the EU’s rural vision, the recent stocktaking report, and the nine strategic questions it features, which are intended to support post-2027 policy discussions. Mario Milouchev, Director at the European Commission’s DG AGRI, outlined the key points and invited mountain stakeholders to contribute their views and ideas.

The conference further highlighted the MOVING project policy recommendations for strengthened mountain value chains. These are brought together within a policy roadmap focused on mountain farming value chains, whose impact, however, goes well beyond their economic aspects. Hence, the recommendations are relevant for a wide range of themes and policies.

The upcoming roadmap will provide a detailed strategic framework for enhancing mountain value chains in line with evidence- and place-based policies, and collaboration. It is built on eight needs-driven blocks, such as better governance and regulation; growing skills, knowledge, and innovation; and preparing and adapting for change.
