European Commission launches public consultation on affordable housing – send feedback by 31 July

The consultation will inform the Commission’s review of State aid rules for services of general economic interest (SGEI). National, regional and local authorities, stakeholders and the general public are invited to submit their views on facilitating affordable housing investments.

The results of the consultation and related call for evidence will contribute to clarifying and simplifying aid procedures, encouraging investment, and updating key concepts

A revamped State aid framework would equip EU Member States, regions, and local communities with stronger tools to support both urban and rural housing projects. Rural areas – facing unique challenges such as scarce, scattered, or degraded housing – stand to benefit.

The consultation takes place in the context of the EU’s Affordable Housing Dialogue and the forthcoming European Affordable Housing Plan (expected in early 2026).
